This is a preview build that will become Windows 10 version 1809, the October 2018 Update. Insiders are currently testing Windows 10 Preview 17763 for PC, HoloLens and Xbox. Reports today suggest Microsoft will release this build to all users on October 2, effectively signing off on Redstone 5. Earlier today, we discussed Windows 10 Preview 17763 and how any Windows user can download it now. It is worth checking out that guide to enjoy what is essentially the October 2018 Update. However, it is worth remembering that Microsoft has yet to officially say Preview 17763 is the RTM of Redstone 5. So, don’t be surprised if these changes, even if the consensus seems to be this build is RTM. When Windows 10 Preview 17763 transitions into Windows 10 October 2018 Update next month, we expect 17763 to receive an accompanying update. That will be a cumulative release that will fix any minor bugs or shore up security gaps.
Past and Future
While that is the likely timeline, there is certainly a potential for change. Back in the spring, Microsoft was set to roll out Redstone 4 in early April. An RTM build for what would become the April 2018 Update had been released in preview, but Microsoft was forced to pull it. The company found too many bugs in the platform and was forced to delay the April 2018 Update. So much so, the feature upgrade only just made it to general users before April ticked over to May. Looking to the future, Microsoft will finally leave Redstone 5 behind next month. The company is already working on its 19H1 release through previews on the Skip Ahead ring of the Insider Program.
