Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Studio creates a new category. You may be able to guess by the name where the company is going with this product. It combines two of Microsoft’s leading Surface devices into one new form factor. Specifically, a new device that combines the power of a desktop with the convenience of a laptop, along with the portability of a tablet. So, how does Microsoft achieve this in a way that is not a convoluted hardware mess? Well, it combines the Surface Book laptop with the Surface Studio desktop. It takes design elements from both, throws in some amazing hardware engineering, and viola… a new product category. The Surface Book is one of the most powerful laptops on the market, from any platform. The Surface Studio is one of the most powerful desktops on the market, from any platform. Instead of compromising, Microsoft wanted to bring both devices together without losing any of their benefits. The result is the Surface Laptop Studio.

Firstly, this is a unique device that features hinge and movement mechanisms that really no one does better than Microsoft at this point. You should check out the video above to see how can set the Laptop Studio screen in several positions. Certainly, the experience of seeing it in action outweighs any written description. Essentially, the device can be used as a standard laptop, with the display angled in “Studio mode”, or with the screen flat up like a tablet. In terms of specs, Microsoft has brought the complete power of the Surface Studio 2 to the form factor of a laptop. This means a portable workstation with no compromises. It runs the latest 11th generation Intel CPUs alongside high end NVIDIA 3050Ti GPU. Elsewhere, the Surface Laptop Studio has a 14.4-inch PixelSense touch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 32GB of RAM. Microsoft has also added Thunderbolt 4 support, something we reported the company was exploring. It also includes the new Surface Slim Pen 2, which includes a vibration motor for real haptic feedback. Microsoft is billing the Laptop Studio as a do-it-all machine for gaming, intensive editing, and more. It will debut alongside Windows 11 on October 5. Tip of the day: By default computer names in Windows 10 tend to be quite plain. By default, they tend to be ‘WIN’ or ‘Desktop’, followed by a string of random letters and numbers. We show you how to change your PC name with Settings, Command Prompt or PowerShell to make it more easily identifiable.
